The grill opening is sized automatically from the island length. Always use your grill maker's exact cut-out size, and check whether it needs an insulated jacket inside a timber frame.
How to build it
- Check the slab is level and drains away from the island. Use ground-contact treated (UC4) timber or switch to galvanised steel studs for every member that touches the slab.
- Cut every member from Sheet C-02 board by board, then write its part ID on each piece in pencil so nothing gets mixed up.
- Lay a damp-proof strip, then anchor the base tracks (T-01) to the slab with masonry anchors at 500mm centres.
- Stand the frame studs (S-01) at 400mm (16") centres, front and rear walls, leaving the grill bay clear, then fit the top tracks.
- Build the grill cradle and lintel (G-01) for a 811 mm wide opening. Check your grill maker's exact cut-out size and whether an insulated jacket is required inside a combustible frame.
- Fit the countertop support joists (D-01) front-to-back at the top of the frame.
- Screw cement board (~6.9 m2) over the frame, waterproof the joints, then tile or render, and set the countertop.
- Gas and electrical connections must be made by a qualified gas fitter / electrician.
Tools: Mitre / circular saw, Drill-driver + impact driver, Spirit level (1200mm / 4ft), Tape measure, square, pencil, Hammer drill + masonry bit, Cement-board knife / jigsaw.

- How much timber do I need?
- 17 stock boards of 2400 mm (40 cuts in total, 8.8% offcut waste). Estimated timber cost is about EUR 316.
- Can I use steel studs instead of wood?
- The calculator sizes the frame in 2x4 / CLS timber. The same layout and spacing work with steel studs of the same width; outdoors, use ground-contact treated timber or galvanised steel.
